Slow Performing Windows PC

Slow Performing Windows PC

A slow running PC can be due to many reasons, but there tends to be a few general causes that can be easily rectified.

GIVE IT A RESTART
The most common cause of slowness or performance issues are due to the machine not being restarted for a long period of time. Please be aware that there are features in Windows 10 and above that don't always cause the PC to shutdown properly so even if you turn the machine off in the evening it may not actually be shutting down but going into sleep mode. Giving the PC a quick restart or shutting it down for 10 minutes and powering back on should resolve most performance issues.
If you continue to have issues after, please proceed to the next steps.
As a tip for best protecting the life of your machine, we recommend shutting down your machine at least once a week, for an hour or more, to allow it to clear out old cache information and tidy itself up.

CLEAN OUT OLD DATA
If you PC is still struggling with basic tasks, it may be best to check the storage available on your machine. If the PC is beginning to run out of storage space, this will increase it's read and write performance, which will slow it down. Going into File Explorer and checking how much space is available on the C:\ drive will help indicate if this is case or not.
If you notice less that 10% space is available on the drive, see if it's possible to clear out any files you may not longer need to free up some space.

IS YOUR PC UP TO DATE?
If you continue to have performance issues, the third step would be to check for any updates that may be available on your machine.
  1. Click on the Start Menu, and type "updates", this should give you the option for "Check for Updates"
  2. Click on "Check for Updates", which should open the Windows Update window, and click "Check for Updates" from within the window.
  3. Allow updates to install and then restart at a time that best suits you.
Be aware, under "Check for updates" there is an option to "View optional updates", this will include drivers and firmware so make sure these are checked and installed also.

If you continue to have issues with performance after running the above checks, please contact Kee Helpdesk and they will be able to assist further.
